ABOUT THE GAME

Fifty years ago, Prof. Robert Sommer of the University of California at Davis created a socially-conscious version of Monopoly, highlighting racial inequity in real estate and American society through gameplay and nuanced humor.

Inspired by the original which debuted in the 1970s, we’re proud to produce a revamped, reconceived, and revitalized version of the landlord's game, made for today.
It’s Blacks & Whites: 50th Anniversary Edition.

Featuring a new foreword by Prof. Sommer, our refreshed game is funny, and includes brand new artwork, contemporary topics like reparations and gentrification, entertaining modern gameplay, and renewed lessons in the economics of prejudice.

A portion of proceeds from your purchase of Blacks & Whites: 50th Anniversary Edition proudly supports the National Urban League’s Housing Division – providing opportunities for the most vulnerable to achieve housing stability and security through programs like comprehensive housing counseling and foreclosure prevention.

Blacks & Whites: 50th Anniversary Edition was originally successfully funded on Kickstarter and handpicked by Kickstarter as one of its “Projects We Love.”

Our game has since won the Gold Medal at the 2022 International Serious Play Awards in Orlando, FL, was a finalist at the 2022 European Conference on Games Based Learning’s International Educational Games Competition in Lisbon, Portugal, and was a GEE! Learning Game Award finalist at the 2023 Play Make Learn Conference in Madison, WI.
